Marvel Studios made an official announcement that Ryan Coogler, director of Fruitvale Station and Creed, both starring Michael B. Jordan, will be directing Black Panther, starring Chadwick Boseman as the Marvel superhero.
Coogler signed on after the likes of Ava DuVernay and F. Gary Gray, both top directors in their own right, declined from the project during negotiations. Marvel Studios head Kevin Feige had this to say about Coogler’s involvement:
“We are fortunate to have such an esteemed filmmaker join the Marvel family, The talents Ryan showcased in his first two films easily made him our top choice to direct ‘Black Panther.’ Many fans have waited a long time to see Black Panther in his own film, and with Ryan we know we’ve found the perfect director to bring T’Challa’s story to life.”
Joe Robert Cole is working on the film’s script and the film is still set for a Feburary 16, 2018 release date. Meanwhile, look for Boseman to play Black Panther in Captain America: Civil War on May 6.
