#GamerGate the online movement for “ethics in journalism and artistic freedom”-Ach, ach, ach, ACCHOO! Pardon me I’m allergic to bullshit-was once again in the news today when gamer Zoë Quinn was interviewed today on MSNBC about the harassment and death threats that she and Brianna Wu, Anita Sarkeesian, and other women in the gaming community have received for a long time but especially in the past two months. You can watch the video below:
This whole thing started because Eron Gjoni Zoe Quinn’s ex decided to deal with his breakup by getting even with Quinn by writing a 9,000 word blog post ”The Zoe Report”. He did what some jerks do after a breakup, he wanted to shame and embarrass Quinn. He wanted to ruin her reputation. GamerGate (named by former Firefly and Chuck actor Adam Baldwin) is Gjoni’s revenge porn.
I’m not an avid gamer, but I do enjoy playing video games from time to time and watching walkthroughs. I believe the medium is an excellent way to tell stories and create worlds that are amazing and imaginative. I believe that women, POC, LGBTQ, and people with disabilities have the right to enjoy video games, to be represented in the games they play in a non stereotypical fashion, and to be a part of the industry without being harassed or receive death threats. They have the right to be able to discuss and criticize the games and industry that they love without receiving death threats or being harassed. And they should have the right to attend conventions, give a speech, etc. without having someone threaten to shoot up a school.
Basically what I’m saying is video games are for EVERYBODY and not just for straight white guys. Sorry not sorry, we’re here and we ain’t leaving. Instead of giving you a post about Gamer Gate I’ve created a master post of articles from various geek sites and mainstream sites that go into detail about the subject. Have at it:
